Will you believe in something that you do not understand?
SCRIPTURE
Do you think you can explain the mystery of God? Do you think you can diagram God Almighty? God is far higher than you can imagine, far deeper than you can comprehend, stretching farther than earth’s horizons, far wider than the endless ocean. Job 11:7-9, The Message
SPOTLIGHT
We live in a world of mystery. Every day we are surrounded by and face many things we do not understand. Somebody made a list of everyday mysteries that we wonder about:
Ever wonder…
- Why the sun lightens our hair but darkens our skin?
- Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed?
- Why we don’t ever see the headline “psychic wins lottery”?
Ever wonder…
- Why is “abbreviated” such a long word?
- Why is it that doctors call what they do “practice”?
- Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?
Ever wonder…
- Why is it that the man who invests all your money is called a broker?
- Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
- Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?
Ever wonder…
- Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
- Why don’t they make airplanes out of the same material that the indestructible black box material is made of?
- Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains?
Ever wonder…
- Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
- If… “con” is the opposite of “pro”, is Congress the opposite of progress?
- If… flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
Ever wonder about God? Can you comprehend Him? Can you explain or define Him? Are you able to know how powerful God is? If you search long enough, will you understand Him? Can you know God? The answer to these questions is both “NO” and “YES.”
God is infinite. He is not limited to or confined by the universe. In today’s Scripture focus, the Bible says God is a mystery. He cannot be explained. It points out that God’s knowledge is higher than the heavens. In addition, God’s wisdom is deeper than the underworld. Add to that, God’s power and presence are broader than the earth and wider than the sea. Here is a description of God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. God is fathomless, faultless, and forever. He is beyond imagination or comprehension. God cannot be identified by a drawing or measurement of space or time. He is incalculable. No one is greater.
Man is finite. You have difficulty conceiving how something can be infinite because you are definable, measurable, and terminable. It is hard to think of someone who has no limitations. You find it challenging to believe something to be true but cannot be understood or seen. You find it difficult to wrap your mind around someone who has no beginning and no end.
This is THE MYSTERY OF GOD. As a human being you will never fully understand or totally comprehend God’s nature, plans, and purposes for man. But that does not mean you cannot know God. The mystery does not have to be solved in order to know God. He realized this and proved it by sending Jesus Christ, His Son, into the world. God gave Himself a face, body, mind, emotions and all that life is when He commissioned His Son to leave heaven and enter planet earth. You can know God without understanding God. The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages is disclosed through Jesus Christ. [Colossians 1:26.27] Paul writes, “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him, all things were created: things in heaven, and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers, or rulers or authorities. All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things and in him all things hold together.” [Colossians 1:15-17 NIV.]
There is a Sherlock Holmes in everyone. You want to solve THE MYSTERY OF GOD, but you cannot. God is infinite. Man is finite. God is eternal. Man is temporal. God is independent. Man is dependent. Many aspects of God remain unknown, but God decided to make Himself known by sending His Son to earth. You can know God by believing what the Bible says about Him.
St. Augustine said 3 things which need to be remembered:
- Thou hast made us for Thyself, and the heart of men is restless until it finds its rest in Thee.
- If you understand God, it is not God.
- God loves each one of us as if there was only one of us.
You have a longing to know God. You have the privilege to know God by making Jesus Christ, God’s Son, your Savior and Lord. You have an unbelievable destiny that will not be discovered until you do this. You can solve part of the mystery by believing. [Hebrews 3:1]
